Kruger National Park

South Africa's flagship reserve — nearly two million hectares of Big Five bushveld, and the easiest safari in Africa to combine with Victoria Falls.

Big Five Bushveld

The Flagship Reserve

Kruger is vast — close to two million hectares of savannah, bushveld and river country running along South Africa's eastern border. It holds all of the Big Five, and its road network and lodge infrastructure are the best developed on the continent.

That infrastructure is the point. Kruger suits travellers who want serious wildlife without roughing it, families who need flexibility, and anyone pairing a safari with Cape Town or Victoria Falls — the connections are short and frequent.

  • The Big Five in one of Africa's largest and best-known reserves
  • Morning, evening and night game drives in open vehicles
  • Guided bush walks with armed rangers

The Highlights

The Best of Kruger

What a Kruger trip is actually made of, beyond the checklist of animals.

🦁

The Big Five

Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino all occur here in good numbers. Leopard sightings in particular are among the most reliable anywhere, especially in the private reserves along the western boundary.

🚙

Open-Vehicle Game Drives

Early morning and late afternoon, when the animals are active and the light is worth photographing. Private reserves allow off-road driving to follow a sighting, which the national park itself does not.

🥾

Guided Bush Walks

A few hours on foot with armed rangers, reading tracks and paying attention to the small things a vehicle drives straight past. It changes how the bush feels — and most people rate it their favourite morning.

🌄

The Panorama Route

The escarpment north of the park: Blyde River Canyon, God's Window and Bourke's Luck Potholes. A full day out of the bush and a complete change of scenery, easily built in on the way to or from the airport.

🦅

Birding

Well over 500 recorded species, from ground hornbill and saddle-billed stork to the summer migrants that arrive with the rains. Worth a dedicated guide if birds are your thing.

🌙

Night Drives

Spotlit drives after dark for the nocturnal cast the day drives miss — genet, civet, bushbaby, honey badger, and hunting predators. Offered by both the national park and the private lodges.

Kruger & Victoria Falls

The classic southern Africa pairing — five days of Big Five bushveld, then the Zambezi and the greatest waterfall on earth.

Fly into Kruger Mpumalanga or Hoedspruit, transfer to your lodge and settle in. An optional evening drive if your flight lands early enough.

Out at first light for a full day in the park, with a picnic lunch in the bush and the varied country — savannah, riverine forest, granite koppies — that makes Kruger worth the days.

A morning drive for the predators, then a guided walk with armed rangers. Evening drive with a sundowner stop as the light goes.

A day on the escarpment — Blyde River Canyon, God's Window and Bourke's Luck Potholes — before a last night in the bush.

Transfer and fly north to Victoria Falls, arriving in time to settle in and hear the falls before you see them.

A morning on the rainforest path along the full length of the falls, then an afternoon sunset cruise upstream among hippo and elephant.

A free day for whatever appeals — a helicopter flight over the gorge, white-water rafting, a day trip into Chobe in Botswana, or simply the other bank of the falls.

A last look at the Zambezi before your transfer to Victoria Falls Airport for the flight home.

Timing Your Visit

When to Go

Kruger is a dry-season destination first and foremost — the difference between June and January is dramatic.

The best game viewing by a clear margin. The bush thins out, the grass is short and animals concentrate at the remaining water, so sightings are both more frequent and easier to see. Cold early mornings on an open vehicle — bring a fleece.

Hot, with the first rains arriving and the bush beginning to green up. Newborn impala and a flood of migrant birds. Game viewing is still good and the lodges are quieter than mid-winter.

Lush, hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms. The bush is thick, which makes animals harder to spot, but the landscape is beautiful, birding is at its best and rates drop. Malaria risk is highest in these months — we will advise on prophylaxis.

The park is better value and you can self-drive; the private reserves on the western boundary allow off-road driving, night drives and walking, with far fewer vehicles at a sighting. Many of our itineraries use both, a couple of nights in each.
