Kenya packs an extraordinary amount into short distances. You can be watching lion in the Maasai Mara in the morning and photographing elephant against Kilimanjaro two days later, without the long transfers that longer circuits demand.

It is the country we most often recommend for a first safari or a shorter trip — the wildlife density is exceptional, the road and air network is good, and the Mara in particular delivers big cat sightings that are hard to match anywhere else.

The Maasai Mara

The northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem, and the reason people come to Kenya. Lion, cheetah and leopard at unusually high density on open, drivable grassland — which is exactly what makes the sightings so good.

Amboseli

Big, relaxed elephant herds on open pans with Kilimanjaro filling the horizon behind them. The mountain is shy and often cloud-covered; early morning is your best chance of the photograph you came for.

Lake Nakuru

A fenced sanctuary in the Rift Valley holding both black and white rhino, plus Rothschild's giraffe. Flamingo numbers rise and fall dramatically with the lake's water level, so we set expectations before you go.

Samburu

Hot, dry country north of the equator with a completely different cast: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich. Worth adding if you have already done a classic circuit.

Balloon Safari

A dawn flight over the Mara, drifting low over the herds before a breakfast on the plains. It is a genuine splurge and books out well ahead, but nobody has ever told us they regretted it.

Kenya in Depth — Mara, Nakuru & Samburu

A longer loop for travellers who want more than the highlights reel — big cats, rhino and the dry-country species of the north.

Met on arrival and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your landing time, an afternoon at the Nairobi National Museum or the giraffe centre.

Drive north across the equator into Samburu National Reserve, arriving in time for an afternoon game drive along the Ewaso Ng'iro River.

A full day looking for the dry-country specials — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and oryx — plus the leopards that work the riverine bush.

Long but scenic drive south into the Rift Valley. Afternoon game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park, one of Kenya's strongholds for both rhino species.

Continue southwest to the Mara, arriving for an evening drive as the light goes long and gold over the plains.

A full day in the reserve. Optional dawn balloon flight, and time with a Maasai community in the afternoon if you would like it.

A second full day — the one that turns a good big cat trip into a great one. Early start for the predators, and a picnic lunch out on the plains.

Morning game drive, then the drive or a short flight back to Nairobi for your onward connection.

Timing Your Visit

When to Go

Kenya works all year, but the Mara river crossings and the green-season rains pull in opposite directions. Here is the honest version.

The herds cross the Mara River from the Serengeti and the reserve is at its most dramatic. It is also the busiest and priciest window, and popular crossing points draw a lot of vehicles. Book early — the good camps go months ahead.

Excellent game viewing with thinner crowds and clear skies. Amboseli is at its best for Kilimanjaro views, and Samburu is comfortable. Our usual recommendation for travellers who want quality sightings without peak-season pricing.

The long rains fall around April and May, the short rains around November. Landscapes turn green, birding is superb and rates drop sharply. Some tracks become difficult and a few camps close, so it suits flexible travellers rather than first-timers on a tight schedule.

Five days covers the Mara and one other park at a sensible pace. Eight lets you add Samburu or Nakuru without spending your trip in the vehicle. We would rather you saw two parks properly than four in passing.
